Menu Selection

When selecting your menu, consider perishability, weight, bulk and palatability.  

Expedition foods must be non-perishable (will not go off during the expedition), especially in hot weather.  This rules out fresh meat and fish.  Food that is normally kept in a fridge will have a short life once taken out and is therefore not suitable for expeditions.  

You also need to check that any ready packed meals you propose to take are long-life and do not require refrigeration (check package details for storage information).  Packaging is dead weight and should wherever possible be left at home and the contents  transferred into a lighter/smaller container prior to the expedition.  


Some people are limited in their choice of food by health requirements, religious or ethical convictions.  Therefore all members of the group need to be involved in the choice, it is important to consult over personal needs and preferences.  Keep meals uncomplicated and simple to prepare.  Choose only foods that everyone in your group will eat and enjoy (best if you prepare the menu together).

If you select to take dehydrated foods, try them at home before the expedition, also practice making up various powered milks that are on the market and see which can be boiled.

Products from the supermarkets show calorific values of various foods on the packaging.  The packaging on dehydrated foods will also show how long the food takes to cook and, wherever possible, choose those which cook in the shortest time as this will save fuel.
