The Training Weekends

Gold Expedition Training will take place at the Judd School, Brook Street, Tonbridge TN9 2PN over two weekends in January/February.  Click here to see this year's dates.  You may attend any two days over the two weekends.  Please arrive by 08.45 each day and find your way to the Atwell Building overlooking the upper school field.  We hope to finish by 4.30 p.m.  You will not be camping overnight.

Mark Leach, Ken Taylor and Andy Blundell are all experienced mountain leaders and will run the course.  There will also be other leaders helping over the weekends.  Please remember they are all volunteers and are giving up their free time to help you.

You need to come equipped to be outside whatever the weather on the first of your two days, including both outdoor and indoor shoes as you’ll be undertaking a navigation exercise on the school field and muddy footwear should not be worn inside the building.  You will also need a compass (borrow if possible from school or elsewhere, but if you borrow one, make sure it's an expedition onenot military one with 64 divisions (mils) on the housing.), a pencil/pen and a packed lunch & drinks.

The 2 days will cover the requirements of the Gold expedition including clothing & equipment, country code, route cards, first aid, use of map and compass, pacing & taking bearings, planning a route etc.

At some point during the weekend training you will need to let Andy Blundell know what groups you would like to be in for the training on Dartmoor and for the practice expedition.

The Dartmoor groups need to comprise four or five people and be single-sex groups.  The practice expedition groups should comprise between five and seven people and can be either single-sex or mixed.

Before you go to Dartmoor, please ensure you have a tent & trangia or equivalent stove and you have put up the tent and know how to use the stove!
